“Keep begging, Claire—your pain means nothing in this house, that baby gives you no power, and before this morning is over, I’ll make sure neither you nor your ex-Marine brother ever dares challenge me again.”

Detective Leah Morgan interviewed Claire after her obstetrician approved it.

Claire described the stick, the blocked doorway, the destroyed phone and the loan documents. She also explained that this had not been the first act of intimidation.

Trent had shoved her once during an argument about the clinic. He apologized before she could decide what to do.

He had punched through a closet door after she opened a separate savings account.

He insisted every incident was stress.

Claire had accepted that explanation because Trent could also be tender. He attended prenatal appointments. He painted the nursery himself. After Claire’s father died, Trent handled the funeral food and sat beside Mason through the burial.

Good memories had made each warning easier to isolate.

Detective Morgan asked about Nicole.

“She was recording.”

“Did she encourage the assault?”

“No.”

“Did she try to stop it?”

“No.”

The detective explained that Nicole’s full video had already been copied. It began before Trent dragged Claire from the table.

The first four minutes showed Helen rehearsing what Nicole should capture.

“If she swings at Trent, keep the camera on her,” Helen said.

Richard added, “Don’t record the discussion about the loan.”

Nicole asked what would happen if Claire refused again.

Trent answered, “Then we show the lender she’s unstable and I handle the call.”

The recording had not been intended as evidence of abuse.

It was meant to be edited.

The family expected Claire to strike back or become hysterical. A short clip would then support Trent’s claim that his pregnant wife was suffering an emotional crisis and had temporarily authorized him to manage finances.

It would not legally transfer Claire’s property by itself. But it might delay questions long enough for the loan to fund.

Nicole kept recording after the violence began.

“Why?” Claire asked.

“We’re still asking her.”

The first real consequence arrived that afternoon.

Harbor Women’s Rehabilitation’s bank called Claire’s business partner, Dr. Maya Brooks. Walker & Rowe had submitted financial projections showing that Harbor would make monthly support payments on the bridge loan.

No one at Harbor had approved them.

Several clinic employees now feared their payroll account had been pledged.

Claire needed to leave the hospital, review the records and protect the business.

Her obstetrician refused discharge until morning.

For the first time in her life, Claire could not solve the crisis by working harder.

She gave Maya authority to freeze all nonroutine transfers and contact the clinic’s attorney.
