“Keep begging, Claire—your pain means nothing in this house, that baby gives you no power, and before this morning is over, I’ll make sure neither you nor your ex-Marine brother ever dares challenge me again.”

Nicole’s attorney requested a meeting.

Claire agreed only after Serena arranged for Detective Morgan to know when and where it occurred. The women met in a conference room, not the house.

Nicole wore no makeup. Without her polished office clothes, she looked younger than thirty-five and older than Claire remembered.

“I signed as a witness,” Nicole said. “I did not sign your name.”

“Who did?”

“Trent brought it to me completed.”

“And you witnessed a signature you never saw.”

Nicole nodded.

“Why?”

“Because Dad said payroll depended on it.”

“That explains the loan. It doesn’t explain the video.”

Nicole folded her hands tightly.

Helen had told her to record Claire refusing breakfast, arguing with Trent and “losing control.” The family planned to send edited clips to the lender if Claire challenged the authorization.

Nicole said she intended to keep the unedited version from the beginning.

Claire did not immediately believe her.

Then Nicole revealed messages she had sent Mason six weeks earlier from an anonymous account. They warned that Trent was becoming dangerous and that Richard planned to use Claire’s clinic records for financing.

Mason had received them but could not identify the sender. When he asked Claire whether Trent had threatened her, she minimized the closet door and changed the subject.

Nicole had also helped the emergency alert reach Mason.

Trent disabled the home Wi-Fi at 4:50 that morning. Nicole secretly turned on her phone’s hotspot and connected Claire’s damaged device while pretending to film the breakfast preparations.

The SOS used that connection.

“You knew they might hurt me,” Claire said.

“I knew they wanted to scare you.”

“You watched him drag me.”

Nicole’s eyes filled.

“I thought if I put the phone down, Mom would take it and there would be nothing.”

“You could have called 911.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

Nicole looked toward the blank wall.

Her fear was not only for herself. Her twelve-year-old son, Evan, had epilepsy. Nicole’s job at Walker & Rowe provided their health insurance. Her ex-husband had stopped paying support consistently. Richard threatened to fire her and report her role in altered invoices if she refused the plan.

That made Nicole’s silence understandable.

It did not make it harmless.

Before leaving, Nicole gave Serena a flash drive containing full copies of company billing records.

“Dad and Trent told everyone the showroom expansion caused the cash crisis,” she said. “That isn’t true.”
