Chapter 10 - WHAT THEY REALLY WANTED FROM THE CAMERA
The major twist emerged from an email draft saved in Trent’s business account.
It was addressed to the lender’s risk officer but never sent.
Claire read it in Serena’s office.
My wife is experiencing an acute pregnancy-related psychological episode. She previously authorized the guarantee but is now confused and combative. Attached video confirms her condition. As spouse, I request temporary acceptance of my certification until she is medically cleared.
The kitchen confrontation had two possible outcomes.
If Claire surrendered, Nicole would record her verbal agreement.
If Claire resisted, the family would provoke a physical reaction and send an edited video to portray her as unstable.
The forged authorization was not their only plan.
It was bait.
The stick, the blocked doorway and the camera were designed to create a substitute story after the lender questioned the signature.
Three details now carried different meaning.
Helen cleared the kitchen island so Nicole’s view would remain unobstructed.
Richard kicked Claire’s phone away because any recording from Claire’s side would undermine theirs.
Trent struck the floor beside her instead of her stomach because visible injury to the baby would ruin the claim that the family was merely managing a mental-health emergency.
They wanted fear without evidence they could not control.
The plan did not require a legitimate power of attorney. They needed only hours of confusion—long enough to pressure the lender, move money and restore the client accounts before auditors arrived.
If the lender refused, they planned to use Claire’s “episode” to delay her access to the company and clinic records.
Nicole confirmed the family had discussed taking Claire to the wellness house afterward.
“They said it would be one night,” she whispered.
“One night where no one knew where I was.”
Nicole nodded.
The twist did not make Trent less violent.
It made his violence more calculated.
He had not lost control because breakfast was unfinished. He used cruelty as part of a financial strategy.
Claire faced an immediate choice.
Prosecutors and financial investigators wanted Nicole to cooperate fully. In return, they would consider her assistance when reviewing the false witness signature and edited company records.
Claire could oppose any favorable treatment and demand that Nicole face the maximum available consequences.
Or she could tell the truth: Nicole had participated, hesitated and then preserved the evidence that stopped the plan.
Mason wanted no leniency.
“She gambled with your life.”
Claire placed a hand over the baby moving beneath her ribs.
“Yes.”
“So why help her?”
“Because accountability is not pretending everyone did the same thing.”
Claire agreed to provide an accurate statement.
She would not forgive Nicole in advance.
