Chapter 9 - THE CALL CLAIRE MADE AFTER SHE LEFT

Claire did not sleep in the house that night.
She left with one overnight bag, the deed copies, the fever thermometer, and every essential document already packed in a canvas tote she had hidden in the coat closet three days earlier.
Ethan shouted after her from the kitchen. Patricia called her dramatic. Neither one followed her into the driveway because both now understood there would be consequences if they escalated physically again.
Molly met Claire at a boutique hotel in SouthPark.
A physician assistant from urgent care diagnosed influenza and dehydration just after midnight, prescribed medication, and ordered strict rest.
Rachel came by the next morning with coffee, legal folders, and news.
The locksmith had already rekeyed the house with Claire’s authorization because the title and utility records were sufficient. Formal notice to Ethan and Patricia would be served that afternoon. Rachel also filed an emergency motion seeking exclusive possession of the residence based on threats and intimidation.
Claire should have felt relieved.
Instead, she cried for the first time in weeks.
Not over the affair.
Not over the house.
Over the humiliation of realizing how sick she had been when the man she married chose to strike her rather than ask if she needed a doctor.
Molly sat beside her on the hotel bed and said the simplest thing anyone had said yet.
“You do not have to become made of stone just because you were right.”
Claire let herself grieve for twenty minutes.
Then she took Rachel’s call with the forensic accountant.
The hotel receipts were only the beginning.
Ethan had also diverted client-retainer funds through two vendor accounts and used those accounts to cover personal expenses, including Patricia’s condo fees and Vanessa’s travel.
The divorce would no longer be about emotional cruelty alone.

It would become expensive, traceable, and public.
Patricia hated nothing more than public.
