Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT CLAIRE PREPARED THE REAL PAPERS

The second document Claire revealed behind the deed wasn’t just the hotel photo.

It was an eviction notice draft prepared by Rachel.

Not yet filed, but ready.

The notice named Ethan and Patricia as occupants with revoked permission to remain on the premises, effective immediately pending formal service.

It also referenced a forthcoming protective request based on intimidation, attempted coercion, and threats made in the home.

Claire hadn’t planned to use it that night.

Rachel intended to serve everything the following morning after Claire left for a hotel or for her friend Molly’s guesthouse.

But fever changes timelines.

Once Ethan slapped her, once he threatened her with the chair, once Patricia shoved her backward and openly gloated about homelessness, Claire stopped preserving any illusion that patience would make the exit gentler.

So while Patricia was upstairs unpacking and Ethan was on the back patio with his phone, Claire took five desperate minutes in the locked powder room.

She splashed water on her face, texted Rachel a single word—Tonight—then tucked the deed copy, hotel photo, and notice draft inside her coat.

Rachel replied that she was calling a locksmith for the next morning and drafting an emergency injunction request in case Ethan tried to re-enter after service.

Claire looked at herself in the powder-room mirror.

Her skin was gray from fever.

Her eyes looked older.

Her hand was shaking so badly she could barely zip the folder shut.

She should have felt broken.

Instead, for the first time in months, she felt oriented.

She did not need Ethan’s confession.

She did not need Patricia’s apology.

She did not need a dramatic witness.

She only needed the truth in the right order.

When she walked back into the kitchen, Ethan thought he was staging her humiliation.

In reality, she was staging his collapse.
