Chapter 4 - WHY CLAIRE GOT SICK AT THE PERFECT TIME FOR ETHAN

Claire’s fever began two days before Ethan shoved the divorce papers at her.
At first, she thought it was flu.
By the afternoon of the second day, she was shivering so hard she couldn’t hold a mug steady. Ethan came home, felt her forehead, and said, “Great timing,” with the kind of cold irritation that only made sense if her illness had disrupted something more important than her health.
That evening, Patricia arrived with overnight bags.
She did not ask whether Claire needed a doctor.
She asked whether the property records were still in the home office safe.
Claire said she was too sick to talk.
Patricia smiled thinly and replied, “That has always been your strategy when adults start discussing money.”
Claire lay awake that night, drenched in sweat, listening from the upstairs bedroom while Ethan and Patricia spoke in the kitchen.
At first the words blurred together.
Then she heard her own name.
“She won’t fight in this condition,” Patricia said.
“She just needs to sign.”
“And if she doesn’t?”
A chair scraped.
Then Ethan’s voice, lower.
“She signs, or she leaves with nothing and we file first. Once I’m in the house and the optics are clean, she’ll look unstable.”
Patricia said, “Then don’t wait too long. You still haven’t fixed the Atlanta problem.”
Atlanta.
Vanessa.
Claire closed her eyes.
The fever made everything slow and unreal, but the meaning was simple enough.
Her illness wasn’t unfortunate for Ethan.
It was useful.
The next morning, Claire texted Rachel from the bathroom floor, because it was the only room where she could lock the door without attracting attention.
I think they’re trying to force me into signing something while I’m sick. If anything happens, the deed is already copied. The house stays in my name.
Rachel replied within two minutes.
Do not sign anything except what we discussed. If needed, sign theirs too, but only after checking the final pages. You are protected. And Claire—record what you can.
That message gave Claire the shape of her next move.
She was too weak to physically fight them.

So she decided she would let them think the scene belonged to them.
Then she would take it back all at once.
