Chapter 10 - THE MOTHER WHO CHOSE APPEARANCES OVER SURVIVAL
When the process server reached the house, Ethan wasn’t there.
Patricia was.
She accepted the eviction-related notice and then called Claire seventeen times in one hour.
Claire did not answer.
Finally, Patricia left a voicemail that revealed more than she meant to.
“You have no idea what you’re doing. Ethan just needs time. If you destroy his business now, everybody loses. You don’t throw away a marriage over one woman and some temporary debt.”
Temporary debt.
There it was again—that Bennett habit of renaming collapse in softer language.
Rachel traced the business exposure quickly enough.
Ethan’s company wasn’t simply in a rough patch.
It was close to insolvency.
Two major clients had already suspended future work. A pending tax issue withhold on vendor payments was likely weeks away from surfacing. Ethan had personally guaranteed more than he admitted to anyone, including Patricia.
He had not been trying to take temporary possession of Claire’s house for pride alone.
He needed an address, an image, and a financial foothold from which to convince lenders, clients, and perhaps even the court that he remained stable.
Claire’s house was not home to him.
It was collateral disguised as marriage.
That was the deeper thing Patricia had chosen to protect.
Not Ethan’s happiness.
Not family unity.
Economic appearance.
The Bennett family myth depended on the house, the marriage, and the illusion that Ethan remained a successful man with a respectable wife in a luxury kitchen.
A divorced son having an affair was survivable.
A financially failing son exposed as abusive inside a house he didn’t own was not.
Once Claire understood that, Patricia’s cruelty made colder sense.
Patricia would rather see Claire feverish, slapped, and forced out into the night than watch the family story collapse in front of strangers.
