Chapter 5: Before Sunrise

Three months later, the house belonged to Emma again.

Legally.

Permanently.

The court voided every fraudulent transfer.

Every forged authorization.

Every manipulated document.

Ryan and Chloe lost everything they had gained.

And much more.

The first night we moved back in, snow fell across Chicago exactly the way it had the morning I found her beneath the overpass.

Emma stood by the living room window watching it fall.

The same window where she used to drink coffee every morning.

I wrapped my arms around her shoulders.

For a while neither of us spoke.

Then she asked quietly,

"Do you ever wish you hadn't found out?"

I looked at her.

"No."

"Even after what it cost?"

Especially after what it cost.

Because the truth had revealed something more valuable than money.

It showed me who truly loved us.

And who never had.

I kissed her forehead.

Outside, snow covered the city.

Inside, the house finally felt like home again.

Some betrayals destroy families forever.

May you like

Others expose them.

And before sunrise on the day my brother lost everything, I finally understood the difference.
