Chapter 2

Chapter 2: The House That Vanished
I froze.
The snow continued falling around us.
"What do you mean there isn't a house?"
Emma lowered her eyes.
"Your brother sold it."
The words felt impossible.
Ryan?
My younger brother?
The man who had promised to help while I was overseas?
The man who called every week to tell me everything was fine?
"No," I said immediately.
But even as I spoke, doubt crept into my voice.
Emma slowly reached into a worn plastic grocery bag beside her.
Inside were documents.
Hospital records.
Property transfers.
Legal notices.
Eviction paperwork.
My hands shook as I looked through them.
Three years earlier, Emma had been seriously injured in a car accident while I was overseeing a bridge project in Germany.
The doctors expected a long recovery.
Ryan had volunteered to help.
He handled the insurance claims.
The mortgage payments.
The paperwork.
Everything.
Every time I called, he reassured me.
"She's recovering."
"Don't worry."
"I've got everything under control."
Now I understood.
He had controlled everything.
Including the lies.
Emma swallowed hard.
"He brought documents to the rehabilitation center."
"What documents?"
"He said they were insurance forms."
I felt sick.
"I was heavily medicated. I trusted him. I signed whatever he put in front of me."
The snow seemed colder.
The city seemed darker.
My own brother had used my injured wife to steal our home.
Then he abandoned her.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Emma laughed softly.
It wasn't a happy sound.
"Because everyone around Ryan already knew."
My heart sank.
How many people had watched this happen?
How many had stayed silent?
May you like
And most importantly...
How much had my brother stolen?
