“I found my wife sleeping under a highway overpass while my brother and his wife were hosting parties in the $450,000 home they stole from her.”

Chapter 1: The Woman Beneath the Overpass

If you think the worst betrayal comes from strangers, you've never been betrayed by family.

The morning after I returned to Chicago, I couldn't sleep. Four years of airports, construction sites, boardrooms, and international contracts had trained my body to wake before dawn. At five in the morning, I left my downtown hotel and started walking through the cold winter streets, hoping the freezing air would clear my head.

Snow drifted from a dark gray sky.

The city was still half asleep.

I passed closed coffee shops, empty bus stops, and silent office towers until I reached an overpass near the river.

That's when I saw her.

At first, she was just another figure hidden beneath layers of newspapers and blankets.

Then she moved.

And my world stopped.

"Emma?"

My voice barely came out.

The woman slowly lifted her head.

Her long chestnut hair was tangled. Her face looked thinner than I remembered. Her hands trembled from the cold.

Then her eyes met mine.

And I knew.

My wife.

The woman everyone told me was safe.

The woman I had spent four years working for.

The woman I had trusted my family to protect.

She stared at me like she was seeing a ghost.

"Daniel?"

The coffee slipped from my hand and shattered against the pavement.

I dropped to my knees beside her.

The snow landed on her hair.

On her shoulders.

On the torn newspapers wrapped around her body.

I pulled off my coat and wrapped it around her immediately.

Tears filled my eyes.

"Emma... what happened to you?"

For a moment, she couldn't answer.

May you like

Then she whispered something that made my stomach drop.

"There isn't a house anymore."
