Chapter 4

Chapter 4: The Beginning of the Collapse

The investigation moved faster than anyone expected.

Much faster.

Fraud investigators discovered forged disclosures.

Bank transfers hidden through shell accounts.

False notary certifications.

Medical exploitation.

Property manipulation.

Insurance irregularities.

The deeper they looked, the worse it became.

Ryan hadn't simply stolen a house.

He had built an entire financial empire on lies.

Within forty-eight hours, his accounts were frozen.

By the third day, federal investigators were reviewing years of transactions.

Business partners disappeared.

Investors stopped returning calls.

Friends who had filled his parties suddenly vanished.

Then came the lawsuits.

Then the criminal inquiries.

Then the media attention.

Everything Ryan had spent years building started collapsing at once.

One evening he appeared outside my office.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Smaller.

Desperate.

"Daniel, please."

I said nothing.

"It got out of control."

Still nothing.

"I never thought she'd end up homeless."

That was the first thing he chose to apologize for.

Not the fraud.

Not the theft.

Not the betrayal.

Only the outcome.

As if ruining Emma's life would have been acceptable if nobody noticed.

I looked directly into his eyes.

"You didn't steal from me."

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

Then I finished.

"You stole from someone who trusted you."

The relief vanished from his face.

He knew there would be no forgiveness.
