Chapter 8 - Taking the House Back
The sheriff’s convoy pulled into the driveway at four-thirty. By then, the snow had stopped and the sky was the hard, clear blue that comes after a storm has finished proving its point.
Ethan stepped out of his truck with Emma beside him and Noah strapped safely against her chest. Lena and the probate attorney followed. Two deputies approached the front door first.
Diane opened it wearing lipstick and indignation. Richard was behind her in a cashmere coat, Kyle at his shoulder. They looked like people who had expected one more day to invent a new lie.
Sheriff Bell handed Richard the court order. “You are to vacate the property immediately. You are also being served notice of a criminal investigation into forgery, unlawful restraint, child endangerment, and attempted coercive custody interference.”
Kyle’s face drained. “This is insane.”
Ethan’s eyes settled on him. “You locked the door.”
Kyle looked away first.
Richard crumpled the first page in his fist. “That house was promised to me.”
Lena stepped forward. “No. You were permitted to benefit from it so long as you didn’t try to prey on Ethan’s wife and child. You violated the protective clause. Your benefits terminated the moment you filed the forged transfer.”
Diane’s voice turned shrill. “Samuel wouldn’t do that to family.”
Emma, quiet until then, finally spoke. “A man who had to protect his grandson from his own son would.”
The silence after that was perfect.
Deputies supervised while movers carried Richard and Diane’s belongings from the main suite they’d claimed. Kyle was allowed one duffel and whatever fit in his truck. Ethan watched without gloating. He had learned long ago that justice didn’t need theatrics to feel complete.
At the base of the stairs, Diane turned back, eyes bright with fury. “After everything we did for you—”
Ethan cut her off. “You left my wife and my son outside to freeze.”
