Chapter 5 - What Emma Endured

While Lena worked, Emma finally told Ethan what the last six weeks had really looked like. Not the cleaned-up version she’d tried to survive. The real one.

Richard’s contracting business had started bleeding money in the fall. Kyle had quietly taken cash advances on credit cards in Diane’s name. Then one afternoon Richard came home from a meeting with the family accountant looking twenty years older and twice as mean.

“That’s when everything changed,” Emma said. “They started talking about the house like it was already theirs. Your mom kept saying you’d been gone too long and that men overseas lose perspective.”

Ethan gave a humorless laugh. “That sounds like her.”

“She told me a real Walker woman would’ve moved your parents into the main suite before now. Then she started making comments about my drinking.”

He frowned. “You don’t drink.”

“I know.” Emma stared at her lap. “That didn’t matter. She poured wine into a glass and left it next to my nursing chair. She told neighbors I had mood swings. She even called my OB’s office pretending to be me and asked whether postpartum psychosis could come on late.”

Ethan swore softly.

“Richard wanted the house,” Emma went on. “But Diane wanted Noah. Not because she loved him—because she loved the idea of winning.”

That hit Ethan harder than the forged documents had. He had known his parents were controlling. He had not let himself fully admit they were capable of cruelty without purpose. Emma had lived inside that truth alone.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” he asked, not accusing, just aching.

Her eyes met his. “Because your calls were getting shorter, and every time I tried to tell you something serious, one of them was in the room. Then your messages stopped for nine days. Richard said you were in a combat blackout and I didn’t want to load more stress onto you if I was just… scared.”

Ethan closed his eyes. Nine days. Exactly the window before he’d been moved between operating sites.

“You weren’t scared,” he said. “You were right.”

She nodded once. “I know that now.”

He kissed her forehead gently. “From here on out, no more surviving alone.”
