Chapter 4 - Proof in the Dark

By midnight, Emma and Noah were on their way to St. Mary’s for observation, and Ethan was riding behind the ambulance in his truck while Lena reviewed documents from three states away. The storm had slowed, but the anger in Ethan’s chest had not.

At the hospital, Noah was declared cold but safe. Emma’s hands would heal. The doctor called it “mild to moderate cold exposure” and documented everything. Ethan made sure every word went into the chart.

When he returned to the waiting room, Lena was on video call. “Send me the camera footage,” she said. “Everything from the last six weeks.”

Ethan uploaded the files and began scrubbing through them with Emma beside him. What unfolded on the screen was uglier than either of them expected.

Diane taking Emma’s phone out of her purse while pretending to fold baby laundry.

Kyle at Ethan’s desk, using a screwdriver to remove the visible security camera hub.

Richard meeting with a man in a gray suit in the study and sliding him a stack of papers topped with the Walker Family Trust logo.

Diane in the kitchen saying, “By the time Ethan gets home, the court will think you’re unstable and Noah will already be settled where he belongs.”

Emma inhaled sharply. She hadn’t heard that part.

Then came the porch footage. Kyle shoving the door shut. Richard turning the deadbolt. Diane standing behind the glass while Emma pounded and pleaded, Noah crying in her arms.

The timestamp ran for twenty-eight minutes before Ethan arrived.

In the silence that followed, Emma stared at the tablet with tears spilling down her cheeks. “They really would’ve let him freeze.”

Ethan took her hand carefully, avoiding the bandaged fingers. “No,” he said, voice low and deadly. “They would’ve told themselves they never meant for it to go that far.”

Lena’s voice cut in. “Ethan, I need you to listen carefully. I just pulled the trust file from the original drafting records. There’s more here than standard asset protection.”

Ethan looked up. “What kind of more?”

For the first time that night, even Lena sounded surprised. “The kind your father is going to wish he’d read before trying to steal from you.”
