Chapter 10 - Spring in the Same House

By March, the snow had melted off the porch where Ethan had found them. Emma insisted on keeping one small drift-mark in the wood unpainted until the weather turned warm. “I want to remember,” she said when Ethan offered to replace the whole section.

“Remember what?”

She looked down at Noah in her lap. “That we made it.”

The house no longer felt like Richard’s battlefield or Diane’s stage. Emma painted the nursery the soft green she’d originally wanted. Ethan boxed up every fake deed copy, every poisoned letter, every receipt from those last six weeks, and let the attorneys use them however they needed. The criminal case moved forward. The civil one promised to be uglier. Neither scared him anymore.

On a bright Saturday morning, Ethan installed a new security camera over the porch light—visible this time. Noah watched from his carrier while Emma stood wrapped in a cardigan on the steps, sunlight touching her face instead of frost.

“You know,” she said, “when I was sitting out here that night, I kept telling Noah one thing over and over.”

Ethan climbed down the ladder. “What?”

She smiled, and for the first time since his return it reached all the way into her eyes. “Your daddy comes home.”

Ethan crossed the porch, kissed his son’s forehead, then kissed Emma slowly, carefully, like a promise renewed on purpose. “He does,” he said.

Later that afternoon, he gathered the old keys Richard had copied, the spare key Kyle had hidden, and the brass house key Diane had carried like a trophy. He dropped them all into a lockbox marked for evidence and shut the lid.

Emma leaned against him as the front door swung open behind them, warm air spilling into the spring light. Noah laughed at something only babies understand.

Ethan looked at the doorway, then at the woman who had endured more than anyone should ever have to endure alone, and finally at the son who would grow up knowing exactly what family meant.

His parents had tried to steal a house, a child, and a future.

They lost all three.

And in the same place where they had left his world to freeze, Ethan walked his wife and son back inside, locked the door, and at last brought his family home.
