Chapter 13 - THE CASE THEY COULD FINALLY BUILD

Rosa’s statement did not free Mateo by itself.
But it changed the legal landscape.
She admitted Gabriel had been at Daniela’s house during the murder window.
She admitted she had falsely provided him an alibi.
She admitted she had retrieved Daniela’s financial note from police property and later destroyed it after Gabriel told her it would “confuse things.”
That admission carried consequences of its own.
The Conviction Integrity Unit reopened interviews.
Bank records supported Daniela’s financial concerns.
The photograph placed Gabriel and Rosa inside the house.
Elena’s professionally conducted interviews independently placed both adults there.
Gabriel’s old phone records contradicted his trial timeline.
And Rosa’s corrected testimony destroyed one of the prosecution’s central witnesses against Mateo.
Then investigators found one final piece in the original emergency-call timeline.
Mateo had called Gabriel seven minutes after calling 911.
At trial, Gabriel testified Mateo sounded strangely calm.
The recording of that call had never been played because it was not preserved by Gabriel.
But phone records showed something important.
Gabriel did not answer.
He called Rosa instead.
Thirty seconds later.
If Gabriel had been innocent and unaware of Daniela’s death, nobody could explain why Mateo’s emergency call prompted him to contact Rosa immediately.
It was not proof of murder.
It was one more piece that fit the same pattern.
Nina filed an amended post-conviction petition.
The state agreed an evidentiary hearing was necessary.
Months passed.
Mateo turned thirty-nine.
Elena turned nine.
Warden Cole transferred to another facility before the hearing.
On his final week, he stopped beside Mateo during movement.
“You still have that little necklace case going?”
Mateo smiled faintly.
“It got bigger.”
Cole nodded.
“They usually do.”
Mateo looked at him.
“You could’ve treated it like contraband.”
“It was contraband.”
Mateo laughed.
Cole continued walking.
“I just didn’t say it was only contraband.”
The locket eventually sat sealed in an evidence container on Nina’s table.
It looked absurdly small beside thousands of pages of records.
May you like
But it had done something none of those documents had managed alone.
It had given Elena permission to speak.
