Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN IN THE REFLECTION
The photograph underwent high-resolution forensic scanning.
The original was tiny.
Enlarged, the image became grainy but useful.
Daniela sat at the kitchen table.
Gabriel stood beside her.
The envelope marked VARGAS CONST.—MISSING rested between them.
Then the technician noticed the dark rectangle behind Gabriel.
A microwave door.
Its glossy surface reflected part of the kitchen.
And part of a person.
Silver-streaked dark hair.
A burgundy jacket.
A woman’s profile.
Rosa.
Mateo stared at the enlargement until Nina turned it away.
“No.”
“It appears to be her.”
“No.”
He stood.
His mother had not arrived later.
She had been there while Daniela and Gabriel were arguing.
Three earlier details changed at once.
Rosa had collected the financial note from police after Daniela’s death.
Rosa had testified that Gabriel remained with her all evening.
Rosa had discouraged Elena for years from discussing “bad memories” about the night her mother died.
The photograph did not show Rosa killing anyone.
It showed something emotionally harder for Mateo to accept.
His mother had known Gabriel’s alibi was false before his trial ever began.
Nina and Marcus eventually reconstructed the financial truth.
Their late father had left Vargas Construction with more debt than Mateo knew.
Gabriel tried to rescue it through risky property investments.
Rosa knew.
When those investments failed, she secretly mortgaged her own house and gave Gabriel money.
It was not enough.
Gabriel began moving company funds.
Daniela discovered everything.
If she reported it, Gabriel faced possible criminal exposure and the family company might collapse.
Rosa begged Daniela to keep quiet.
Daniela refused.
The photograph had been taken by Elena using a small instant camera Daniela had bought her weeks earlier.
Daniela apparently wrote the date and note on the back afterward.
That night, according to Elena’s memories, the argument escalated.
The evidence still did not prove exactly how Daniela received the fatal blow.
But Rosa had been there.
And she had lied.
Why?
Her attorney eventually provided a limited statement.
Rosa claimed she arrived after Daniela had already fallen.
Gabriel told her Daniela had attacked him during an argument and the death was accidental.
Rosa panicked.
She believed Gabriel would go to prison.
She believed Mateo, who had already argued with Daniela publicly, would only be questioned.
She never expected him to be convicted.
Mateo read that sentence three times.
She never expected him to be convicted.
His mother had gambled with his life because she thought the lie would stop before it reached him.
It did not.
And once the prosecution arrested Mateo, Rosa made another choice.
