CHAPTER 7

CHAPTER 7

The divorce took seven months.

Jackson fought until the bank records made him look worse. Grace gave one deposition and contradicted herself five times before lunch. Vanessa cried and claimed she had only been joking about my apartment.

Maybe she had.

Some jokes are just cruelty testing the room.

The apartment stayed mine.

My savings stayed mine.

Jackson left the marriage with less than he expected and more than he deserved.

I returned to Minneapolis in spring.

The first night back in my apartment, I stood in the doorway for almost ten minutes before turning on the lights.

Everything was exactly as I had left it.

The blue sofa.

The drafting table near the window.

The city skyline beyond the glass.

The framed photo of my father helping me carry the first box inside years ago.

I pressed my palm against the wall and cried.

Not because I was weak.

Because I was home.

For weeks, I kept expecting the phone to ring with another demand. Another accusation. Another family member explaining why I should forgive what they had all witnessed.

But silence came instead.

Real silence.

Safe silence.

The kind that belongs to you.

One year later, I hosted dinner in that apartment.

Marissa came. Rachel came. My sister flew in from Denver. We ate roast lamb because I refused to let Jackson’s family own that memory.

At dessert, Rachel raised her glass.

“To saying no.”

I smiled.

“To making sure they hear it.”

The scar near my cheek faded, but it never disappeared completely.

I stopped covering it.

Some marks are not shame.

Some are punctuation.

Mine marked the end of a sentence I should have finished long before that dinner.

Jackson tried to take my home for his mother.

Grace tried to turn family into a weapon.

Their relatives tried to hide behind silence.

But when the plate shattered, so did the lie that I had no power.

Because I had my name on the deed.

My voice on the call.

May you like

Their words on the recording.

And finally, my life back in my own hands.
