CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
Grace came to my house two days later.
Not my apartment.
My Beverly Hills rental, where I had been staying while managing a hotel redesign project.
She arrived wearing cream silk and pearls, carrying no apology.
Rachel had warned me not to open the door alone, so my friend Marissa stood beside me while I answered.
Grace looked past me as if checking what else her son had failed to control.
“You need to drop the charges.”
“No.”
Her eyes sharpened.
“My son made one mistake.”
I touched the bandage on my cheek.
“He made a choice.”
“You embarrassed this family.”
“You watched him hurt me.”
Grace leaned closer.
“You do not understand how families like ours survive.”
I almost smiled.
“I understand exactly. You call cruelty loyalty until someone records the damage.”
Her face changed.
Because I had recorded more than the 911 call.
Before dessert, when they began discussing my apartment, I had quietly turned on my phone’s voice recorder under the table.
It captured Grace saying my property should be “absorbed into the family.”
It captured Jackson saying I “owed him” after all his failed businesses embarrassed him.
It captured Vanessa laughing that I would be “easier to manage” once Grace moved in.
Grace looked at my purse.
“You recorded us?”
“In my own defense,” I said.
“You are a vicious woman.”
“No,” I replied. “I’m an architect. I know when a structure is rotten.”
Her lips trembled with rage.
“You will never be welcome in this family again.”
For the first time since marrying Jackson, those words felt like a blessing.
“Good,” I said. “Tell them I declined the invitation.”
I closed the door.
My knees almost gave out afterward, but Marissa caught me.
May you like
Healing had not started yet.
But the hiding had ended.
