CHAPTER 1

He tried to steal my apartment for his mother, then shattered a plate against me when I said no, but when I calmly dialed 911, his entire family realized silence could make them witnesses.

Jackson was still standing over me when the room went quiet.

Not the kind of quiet that comes from shock.

The kind that comes from people deciding whether they are brave enough to tell the truth.

Broken porcelain glittered across the white tablecloth. Mushroom sauce ran down my shoulder. My left cheek burned where the plate had struck, and my hand shook as I gripped the edge of the chair.

Jackson’s mother, Grace, sat at the head of the table with her wineglass halfway to her mouth.

“She needed to learn respect,” she said coldly.

No one corrected her.

Not Jackson’s father.

Not his brother.

Not the cousins who had spent the evening smiling at me while discussing my apartment like it was already empty.

My apartment in Minneapolis.

The one I bought before Jackson.

The one I paid for with ten years of architectural deadlines, canceled vacations, and nights sleeping under my desk during project season.

Grace wanted it because stairs were “too difficult now.”

Jackson wanted me to hand it over because his mother “deserved comfort.”

His family wanted me to send her $1,200 a month on top of it.

I had said one word.

“No.”

And my husband had thrown a plate at my face.

I slowly reached into my purse and pulled out my phone.

Jackson’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?”

I looked at him through tears I refused to wipe away.

“You have no idea what I’m capable of.”

His anger flickered.

“What did you just say?”

I dialed.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

My voice was steady.

“I need police and an ambulance. My husband assaulted me in front of his entire family, and every single person in this room witnessed it.”

That was when Jackson finally stepped back.
