CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6

The first hearing was ugly.

Jackson arrived in a navy suit with a bruise on his ego and a lawyer who kept calling the dinner a “misunderstanding.”

Rachel played the 911 audio.

Then the dinner recording.

Then she submitted the hospital report, the witness statements, and the refinance inquiry.

Jackson stared at the table.

Grace sat behind him, perfectly dressed, perfectly silent, perfectly exposed.

The judge listened without expression until Jackson’s attorney argued that I had “escalated a family disagreement.”

The judge looked up.

“A plate thrown at a person’s head is not a disagreement.”

The room went quiet.

The protective order was granted.

Jackson was removed from my financial accounts.

He was ordered not to contact me, enter my properties, or communicate through his family.

The refinance inquiry was referred for investigation.

Grace tried to approach me outside the courtroom, but Rachel stepped in front of her.

Grace looked around Rachel.

“Lena, think carefully. Divorce will ruin him.”

I looked at Jackson standing a few feet away, his face hard with the same anger he had worn at dinner.

“No,” I said. “Marriage was ruining me.”

Jackson’s mask cracked.

“You think you can walk away with everything?”

I met his eyes.

“I’m walking away with what was mine before you tried to take it.”

His jaw clenched.

There he was.

The man behind the vows.

The man who thought love meant access.

May you like

The man who had mistaken my patience for permission.

I filed for divorce that afternoon.
