CHAPTER 9

The footage loaded on Daniel’s phone.
No one spoke.
From the hallway angle, everything was visible.
Richard standing between the two women.
Vanessa behind him, smiling.
Emily holding the folder.
Richard stepping too close.
Emily saying, “Daniel has copies.”
Then the shove.
Clear.
Direct.
Impossible to explain away.
Richard watched himself destroy his own lie.
Daniel lowered the phone.
“The whole hallway saw you,” he said.
Richard’s mouth opened, but no answer came.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with panic.
Emily picked up the folder from the sofa cushion. One corner was bent. The papers inside were still there.
She pulled out the bank statement and held it up.
“Your mistake,” she said quietly, “was thinking fear made me stupid.”
Richard looked around the living room as if the chandelier, the marble floor, and the gold furniture might still protect him.
They did not.
Daniel stepped beside Emily.
“For the record,” he said, “Emily is not signing anything today.”
May you like
Emily looked Richard in the eye.
“Or ever.”
