CHAPTER 6

The sound of her body hitting the sofa was small.
The silence after it was huge.
Emily landed sideways, one hand braced against the cushion, hair falling across her face. A crystal glass tipped on the coffee table, spilling red wine across the front of her white blazer.
For one stunned second, she could not breathe.
Richard stood over her, chest rising, jaw clenched, eyes burning with the kind of fury he usually saved for locked rooms.
Vanessa stood behind him.
She did not look shocked.
That hurt almost as much as the shove.
Richard pointed down at Emily.
“You made this happen,” he said.
Emily’s mouth tasted like fear.
Her lip stung where her teeth had caught it, but she was safe. Shaken, humiliated, furious—but safe.
She lifted her eyes to Richard.
And that was when the double doors opened.
Daniel entered fast, black suit, black shirt, face already hard with worry.
He stopped when he saw Emily on the sofa.
Then he looked at Richard.

His voice dropped.
“Why is she on the floor?”
