Chapter 8 - THE PAPERS RACHEL SIGNED
Rachel filed for divorce three days later.
It did not end the marriage that day.
It started a process.
That distinction mattered.
Melissa also helped her request temporary parenting arrangements and advised Rachel on seeking a domestic-abuse injunction based on Daniel’s physical conduct and the children’s exposure to it.
Nothing happened instantly.
There were forms, statements, dates, service requirements, and a hearing to prepare for.
Rachel signed a six-month lease on a two-bedroom apartment in Monroe so the girls could remain in their school district.
The security deposit took most of her available cash.
She increased her hours at the dental clinic.
She borrowed Nora’s folding table because she couldn’t afford a dining set yet.
For the first week, Grace slept with June in the same bedroom even though each had her own bed.
Daniel’s reaction came through text.
First rage.
Then bargaining.
Then something stranger.
You’re going to destroy the farm over a bowl?
Rachel didn’t answer.
Tell your lawyer to keep my medical history out of this.
Rachel read that message three times.
She had never told Daniel she had found the urology claims.
Someone had warned him.
She called Evelyn.
Daniel’s mother admitted it immediately.
“I asked him what happened last June.”
Rachel felt tired rather than angry.
Evelyn started crying.
“He sounded scared.”
“Of what?”
“I don’t know.”
Rachel did.
At least partly.
