Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE SHE COULD NOT RETURN TO
Rachel had ninety minutes before Daniel finished the afternoon milking.
Her younger sister, Nora, drove from Madison and met her at the farmhouse.
Rachel packed birth certificates, medications, school clothes, three favorite stuffed animals, two laundry baskets, and the girls’ winter boots.
She left most things behind.
Nora watched her photograph the kitchen floor.
The overturned bowl was still beneath the table.
Brown streaks had dried between the floorboards.
“He did this today?”
Rachel nodded.
Nora looked toward the barn.
“And you were going to come back tonight?”
Rachel didn’t answer.
She photographed the tenderness along her scalp and the bruise forming near her hip.
Then she opened the filing drawer beside Daniel’s desk, looking for the girls’ Social Security cards.
She found them.
She also found three bank notices.
Their joint savings account had been nearly emptied during the previous month.
Daniel had transferred $8,400 into an account Rachel didn’t recognize.
“Did you know about this?”
Nora asked.
“No.”
Rachel worked, but her pay covered groceries, school expenses, and their health-insurance premium. Daniel handled the farm money.
For years he had told her they were barely keeping the dairy alive.
Rachel had believed him.
She called the bank from the kitchen.
Because the savings account was jointly held, the representative confirmed the transfers but could not disclose information about the destination account.
Rachel moved the remaining $613 into her own checking account and redirected her next paycheck.
Then she drove away with her daughters.
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
His first message was furious.
His second threatened to report Rachel for stealing the children.
His third was different.
Stay out of my desk.
Rachel read it twice.
She had taken clothes, documents, photographs, and her daughters.
Daniel was worried about the desk.
That night, from Nora’s guest room, Rachel opened the online insurance account she and Daniel shared.
She searched eighteen months of claims.
