Chapter 6 - THE PEOPLE WHO HAD BELIEVED HIM

Evelyn didn’t immediately apologize.

That hurt more than Rachel expected.

Instead, she said, “I need to talk to Daniel.”

“Don’t warn him about what I found.”

Evelyn went quiet.

“He’s my son.”

“And Grace and June are your granddaughters.”

Rachel ended the call.

For the first time, she understood that leaving Daniel would not simply remove one dangerous man from her life.

It would split an entire family built around protecting the farm and protecting each other.

Daniel began calling relatives.

By lunchtime, Rachel’s phone filled with messages.

One cousin said marriages survived worse.

An aunt asked whether Rachel was exaggerating because she wanted half the farm.

Adam Bennett called last.

Daniel’s younger brother managed an equipment dealership twenty miles away and helped during harvest season.

“Did he put his hands on you?”

Rachel said yes.

Adam swore under his breath.

“I saw your scalp last month.”

Rachel remembered.

Adam had come for Sunday dinner. She wore her hair down because Daniel had yanked it the morning before.

Adam asked why she kept rubbing the back of her head.

Daniel answered before Rachel could.

“She smacked it on a cabinet.”

Adam had laughed then.

Now he wasn’t laughing.

“I believed him.”

“So did I, most days.”

Adam offered to confront Daniel.

Rachel told him not to.

Her advocate had already helped her schedule a consultation with a family-law attorney. Until Rachel understood custody, finances, and the farm debt, she wanted everything handled carefully.

That afternoon, Grace refused to speak to her father when he called.

June did.

She lasted twenty seconds.

“Daddy, are you mad at Mommy because we’re girls?”

Daniel said something Rachel couldn’t hear.

June handed the phone back and walked into Nora’s bedroom.

Grace watched her go.

“He told June it was grown-up stuff.”

Rachel put the phone facedown.

Grace looked at her.

“Then why did he make us watch?”
