Chapter 11 - WHAT RACHEL HAD TAUGHT HER DAUGHTERS

Rachel ended the call.

She did not call back.

Later that night, Grace found her sitting on the kitchen floor beside the folding table.

“Did Dad yell?”

“No.”

“That’s worse sometimes.”

Rachel looked at her daughter.

Children were not supposed to know things like that.

Rachel had spent weeks cataloging Daniel’s failures.

Now she had to face one of her own.

She had stayed after the first shove.

She had stayed after he began insulting her in front of the girls.

She had stayed after the first bowl of dirt.

Worse, she had taught Grace to count because Rachel wanted proof without yet being ready to act on it.

“I should’ve taken you out sooner,” Rachel said.

Grace picked at a loose thread on her pajama sleeve.

“Were you scared?”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

That was the closest thing to forgiveness Rachel deserved.

Evelyn called the next day.

This time she apologized.

Not elegantly.

Not completely.

“I thought Daniel was humiliated because you didn’t want another baby,” she said. “I was hard on you because I believed him.”

Rachel answered, “You were hard on me because believing him was easier.”

Evelyn did not argue.

She also admitted she had given Daniel $20,000.

Nearly all of it had gone into overdue feed bills and equipment repairs.

The financial crisis was real.

Daniel’s deception had not created the farm’s problems.

It had created a person he could blame for them.

Melissa reminded Rachel that the vasectomy explained motive but would not decide the abuse case.

Daniel could still deny what happened in the kitchen.

Grace’s notes helped.

Rachel’s photographs helped.

Daniel’s texts helped.

Adam’s observations helped.

But accountability would require more than exposing hypocrisy.

Rachel would have to stand in the same room with Daniel again.
