Chapter 6 - THE DAUGHTER WHO STOPPED DEFENDING HIM

Linda tried to take the brokerage statement from Paige.

Paige held it away.

“You told me the firm stopped sending paper mail.”

“That’s what Ryan said.”

“And you believed him?”

“You believe doctors you work with.”

“I don’t give them my retirement account.”

The argument might once have ended with Paige apologizing. She had spent most of her life yielding to her mother’s certainty and her brother’s competence.

This time she opened the statement.

The account balance was lower than Linda expected by nearly two hundred thousand dollars. The withdrawal appeared as a transfer authorized through an outside adviser portal. The mailing address had been changed to Ryan’s office in Wellesley.

Linda sat down slowly.

“He said it was a temporary transfer.”

Paige asked to see Linda’s online account. Linda resisted until Megan said the alternative was waiting for Ryan to explain everything again.

With Linda’s permission, Paige reset the password and reviewed the activity.

There had been three smaller withdrawals before the large one: five thousand, twelve thousand, then eighteen thousand. Each was followed by a deposit back into the account within a few weeks.

Ryan had been testing whether Linda noticed.

The hundred eighty thousand had never returned.

Paige covered her mouth.

Megan felt no triumph. She knew what it was like to watch an ordinary family habit become evidence.

Ryan had always collected the mail first. He called it being helpful. He insisted on handling vendor deposits because Megan worked late. He pushed for a spring wedding even though neither of them had wanted a short engagement.

Small conveniences had become a system because Megan had allowed competence to substitute for transparency.

Linda looked at the frozen joint account on Megan’s laptop.

“My money paid for your wedding.”

“Some of it did,” Megan said. “Without my knowledge.”

“You wore the ring. You toured the venues.”

“And I’m going to return what’s left.”

Ryan called Paige.

She answered on speaker.

“Get Mom out of there,” he said. “Megan’s trying to build a case.”

Paige looked at the statement in her hand.

“She doesn’t need to build one.”

Ryan went quiet.

Paige asked where the rest of Linda’s money had gone.

He said it was tied up.

“In what?”

“A project.”

“What project?”

Ryan’s voice sharpened. “This isn’t a conversation for a phone.”

Paige looked at their mother. “Then come back.”

“No.”

That single word changed something in Linda’s face. Ryan had always come when she demanded it.

Paige ended the call.

“I’m staying with Mom tonight,” she told Megan. “But I’m not taking her home until we know whether that house is still safe.”

Linda turned toward her.

“What does my house have to do with this?”

Paige scrolled farther down the account page.

“Ryan used your brokerage account as collateral for something called a bridge note.”
