Chapter 1 - THE SLAP BEFORE NOON

Linda Carter’s palm struck Megan Pierce across the face before the muddy heel of her boot had fully crossed the threshold.

The crack bounced off the high ceiling of Megan’s Back Bay condo. Megan’s head snapped sideways, her shoulder striking the coat closet as she kept both hands wrapped around the wooden mop handle between them.

“Move, little girl,” Linda said. “Wives don’t outrank mothers in my son’s home.”

Megan tasted blood where her tooth had cut the inside of her cheek. She was still wearing the white suit she had planned to wear to the florist, then to a late lunch with Ryan’s sister. Instead, she was staring at two suitcases, a taped cardboard box, and a sixty-two-year-old woman grinding wet Boston street mud into pale oak flooring Megan had spent five years paying for.

“This isn’t Ryan’s home,” Megan said. “He lives here because I invited him.”

Linda kicked the cleaning bucket.

Gray water slapped across Megan’s trousers and ran beneath the console table. The mop twisted in Megan’s grip as Linda stepped closer.

“You’ll scrub my mess, cook my breakfast, and hand me cash like a useful fiancée.”

Ryan appeared from the hallway in his navy suit, his tie hanging loose. He stopped when he saw Megan’s cheek.

For one brief second, relief crossed Linda’s face.

That was what frightened Megan.

Not surprise. Not shame.

Relief.

Megan shoved the mop against Linda’s chest before she could advance again.

“Get out of my house.”

Linda smiled past her at Ryan. “By noon, sweetheart, she’ll be begging to stay in a home she thought was hers.”

Ryan went pale.

He crossed the room quickly and caught his mother’s wrist.

“Mom, stop talking.”

Megan lowered the mop by an inch. Ryan had not asked why Linda had suitcases. He had not asked what she meant. He had not even looked confused.

He looked caught.

A buzzer sounded from the wall panel beside the kitchen.

The doorman’s voice came through the speaker. “Ms. Pierce? There’s a gentleman from Beacon Home Lending in the lobby. He says he’s early for the twelve o’clock valuation.”

Megan turned toward Ryan.

“What valuation?”

May you like

Ryan stared at the muddy water spreading over the floor.

He did not answer.
