Chapter 4 - THE DOOR THAT CLOSED BEHIND HIM

The fraud specialist at Beacon Home Lending asked Megan to verify her Social Security number, mortgage balance, and the date she purchased the condo.

Then he asked whether she operated a company called MPR Residential Design.

Megan did not.

She worked as a senior interior architect at a Boston design firm, but she had never formed a private company. Her initials were M.P.

The loan file listed MPR Residential Design as the project consultant for a ninety-two-thousand-dollar renovation. Linda’s dormant cleaning business was named as the flooring and remediation contractor.

The application also identified Linda as a future resident who would contribute to household expenses.

Megan stared at the muddy water again.

Linda had not merely arrived expecting hospitality. Someone had brought her there to make the paperwork look believable.

Ryan denied submitting anything final.

The fraud specialist said the application contained a renovation estimate, proof of insurance, utility records, and electronic acknowledgments from an email address using Megan’s name.

Megan had never seen the address.

The specialist froze the file and advised her to contact her mortgage servicer, credit bureaus, and an attorney. He did not promise an arrest or an easy resolution. He only said the lender would preserve its records.

That was enough to make Ryan furious.

“You’ve turned a family problem into a criminal investigation.”

“You turned my home into collateral.”

“No money was taken from you.”

“Not yet.”

Linda sat rigidly on the sofa, looking older than she had twenty minutes earlier.

Ryan packed a garment bag under the building manager’s supervision. He took two suits, shoes, toiletries, and his work laptop. Megan would not let him remove anything from the desk.

At the door, he said, “I was trying to fix something before it reached you.”

“You used my name to make sure it reached me.”

He looked past her toward his mother. “Tell her to stop calling people.”

Linda did not move.

The elevator carried Ryan away without either woman saying goodbye.

Megan should have felt safer. Instead, the condo seemed more exposed than before, as if the walls had been listening for months.

She photographed the damage, the box, and every item inside it. Then she asked Linda a question Ryan had managed to avoid.

“What is Harbor Ridge Holdings?”

May you like

Linda rubbed her thumb over the handle of one suitcase.

“I thought it was yours.”
