CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6
The civil hearing happened three weeks later.
Tyler walked in wearing a borrowed suit and no watch.
Diane wore black pearls and a face full of practiced sorrow.
Emily sat beside me, thinner than before but steady. Her hand rested in mine on top of the table.
The judge reviewed the medical records, the forged signatures, the deployment logs, the security footage, the hidden phone, the financial transfers, and Tyler’s folder of fake evidence.
The courtroom grew quieter with every exhibit.
Tyler’s attorney tried to argue that it was a family misunderstanding.
The judge did not blink.
“Forgery, coercion, asset concealment, and intimidation are not misunderstandings,” she said.
The transfers were voided.
The company returned to its original ownership.
The house deed was restored.
The investment accounts were frozen pending restitution.
Diane let out a small sound when the judge barred her from contacting Emily.
Tyler stared at me with hatred.
“You ruined us,” he said as officers led him away.
I looked at my brother, the boy I had once protected from schoolyard fights, the man who had harmed my wife while I was overseas protecting strangers.
“No,” I said quietly. “You counted on me loving you more than justice.”
He looked away first.
Outside the courthouse, Emily finally broke down.
I held her on the steps while cameras flashed from a local reporter who had picked up the fraud case.
She whispered, “I thought I lost everything.”
I kissed her hair.
“You didn’t lose me.”
May you like
She cried harder then.
And this time, she let me hold her.
