CHAPTER 5

The audit uncovered everything.

Tyler had used a forged power of attorney.

Diane had scheduled the appointments.

A notary had been paid in cash.

My mother had moved jewelry, heirlooms, and family assets into a storage unit under Tyler’s girlfriend’s name.

But the worst discovery was not financial.

It was a folder on Tyler’s laptop labeled Emily.

Inside were edited photos, fake messages, and drafted accusations meant to destroy her reputation if she tried to speak.

He had planned to make me believe she betrayed me.

He had planned to turn my grief into his weapon.

When Detective Harris showed me the file, I had to leave the room.

Emily found me in the hallway with both hands pressed against the wall, breathing like I was back under fire.

“Jake,” she whispered.

“I believed it for one second,” I said. “When I came home, I asked if there was someone else.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

She touched my arm.

Not afraid this time.

“I was scared you’d believe them.”

I looked at the woman my family had tried to erase.

“They don’t get to write our story.”

Tyler was arrested first.

Diane tried to act shocked until officers showed her the messages she had sent him.

Get her signature before Jake comes back.

Make her feel alone.

Once the company moves, she has nothing.

My mother read those words on the printed page and still looked at me like I was the one betraying her.

“You chose her over blood,” she said.

May you like

I answered without hesitation.

“I chose the woman you hurt.”
