CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2

The next afternoon, I found the old phone.

It was hidden behind folded towels in the guest bathroom cabinet, wrapped in one of Emily’s scarves. Most of the messages had been deleted, but not all of them.

There were bank transfers I had never approved.

Appointments with attorneys.

Property records.

Corporate filings.

Then I opened a scanned document and felt the room tilt beneath me.

The deed to our house had been moved.

Our investment accounts had been drained.

The company Emily and I built before I enlisted had been transferred to a corporation controlled by Tyler.

Every document carried my signature.

A signature I had never written.

I sat on the bathroom floor for a long time, reading page after page while my hands slowly went numb.

Tyler had not just stolen things.

He had built a paper cage around my wife.

That night, Emily fell asleep from exhaustion before midnight. I sat beside her, watching the way she curled inward even in sleep.

When I carefully pulled the blanket higher over her shoulder, I saw the marks.

Dark bruises along her ribs.

Purple fingerprints around her upper arms.

Some fading.

Some fresh.

My breath stopped.

“Who did this to you?” I whispered.

Emily opened her eyes.

The moment she saw my face, she broke.

“Your mother and Tyler,” she sobbed. “They forced me to sign everything. They said no one would believe me. Tyler said if I resisted, it would get worse.”

My heart did not break loudly.

It went silent.

I pulled the blanket over her, kissed her forehead, and looked out the window.

Diane and Tyler were still outside, laughing beside the pool like they had already won.

May you like

They had not.

They had only made the worst mistake of their lives.
