CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3
At sunrise, I drove Emily to the hospital.
She tried to tell me she was fine.
I told her gently, “You don’t have to protect them anymore.”
The doctor examined her injuries and documented every mark. A nurse took photographs for the medical record. Emily cried through most of it, but she did not ask to stop.
That was how I knew something in her had shifted too.
By noon, we were sitting in a police station with a detective named Harris.
I placed the old phone on the table.
“Everything on there was hidden from me,” I said. “The transfers, the property records, the threats.”
Emily’s voice shook, but she spoke.
“They made me sign while Jake was deployed. Tyler said if I told anyone, he’d make it look like I was cheating and unstable.”
Detective Harris looked at the bruising report.
Then he looked at me.
“Mr. Walker, do you have proof the signatures were forged?”
“Yes,” I said.
I opened my deployment records, passport scans, military travel logs, and notarized documents showing I had been overseas on the dates my signature supposedly appeared in Charleston.
Then I opened one more folder.
The original operating agreement for the company Emily and I built.
Tyler thought he had stolen a business.
He had not read the poison pill clause my attorney wrote five years earlier.
Any transfer made under coercion, fraud, or forged consent immediately froze voting rights and triggered a forensic audit.
Emily stared at me.
“You never told me that.”
“I didn’t think we’d need it.”
May you like
Her hand found mine under the table.
For the first time since I came home, she did not flinch.
