Claire’s marriage had not become dangerous overnight.
That was the part she struggled hardest to admit.
Grant had never raised an iron bar before.
He had still spent years making anger feel like something Claire should manage for him.
When contracts failed, he slammed cabinet doors.
When Claire traveled for work, he accused her of enjoying independence too much.
When her company paid larger bonuses than Westbridge could afford, he called Thomas Dawson’s success “money Claire never earned.”
Claire answered by keeping finances separate and avoiding difficult conversations.
She considered that strength.
Sometimes it was avoidance.
She knew Grant resented the trust.
She knew Evelyn referred to it as “Claire’s cushion.”
She knew Grant had asked to be added to the Dawson company board twice despite having no design background.
Claire treated every incident as an isolated ego problem because confronting the pattern might have forced her to reconsider the marriage.
Now she was eight months pregnant and sleeping in Monica’s guest room.
Her marriage was already being reconsidered for her.
The divorce filing triggered mandatory financial disclosures.
Westbridge’s books became harder for Grant to hide.
Natalie’s name appeared everywhere.
Payroll approvals.
Vendor restructuring.
Cash-flow forecasts.
Loan packages.
Claire stared at one email where Grant asked Natalie to calculate “survivor liquidity under all death scenarios.”
