Grant had no ownership interest.

The Dublin house was Claire’s separate property.

Their joint assets were ordinary: checking accounts, vehicles, household savings.

Grant’s real problem was his own company.

Westbridge Medical Logistics transported specialized equipment between hospitals and outpatient centers across Ohio.

For years Grant presented it as successful.

It was not.

His largest hospital contract had been terminated the previous summer after repeated delivery delays. Fuel costs increased. Two commercial lenders tightened their terms.

Grant concealed most of it from Claire.

He told her business was “temporarily uneven.”

A forensic accountant retained by Claire’s attorney found something worse.

Westbridge owed nearly $1.4 million across equipment loans, business credit, unpaid vendors, and personal guarantees.

Evelyn had guaranteed one loan using her home in Upper Arlington.

If Westbridge failed, she could lose the house she had owned for twenty-eight years.

Now her words in the garage made sense.

Evelyn was not waiting to inherit Claire’s estate herself.

She expected Grant to inherit enough to rescue both of them.

Claire asked her estate attorney, Beth Rosen, what Grant would actually receive if Claire died.

Beth hesitated.

Claire had never updated several documents after becoming pregnant.

An older revocable trust still provided that if Claire died without surviving descendants, certain assets passed to Grant.

But the plan was not nearly as simple as Grant apparently believed. Ohio law, trust language, the rights of a child conceived before death, and the state’s slayer protections could all prevent him from benefiting if he caused Claire’s death.
