“By sunrise, you and that unborn mistake will be gone, and the house, the money, and the insurance will finally belong to me and the woman who was always worth more than both of you.”

Claire spent the night at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

The baby was unharmed.

Her wrist was bruised, her scalp sore, and her blood pressure high enough that the obstetric team kept her under observation.

A domestic-violence advocate sat with her while police took a careful statement.

No one promised instant justice.

Grant had been removed from the house. Evelyn had been questioned separately. Officers preserved the heated bar, both phones, photographs of the garage, and the neighbor’s emergency call.

Then Detective Aaron Mills asked about Natalie.

Claire looked toward the hospital window.

“She’s sleeping with my husband.”

“How do you know?”

“I found hotel charges three weeks ago.”

Grant admitted the affair only after Claire confronted him. He said Natalie worked for his logistics company and that the relationship had lasted four months.

He promised it was over.

Claire had not believed him.

The recovered phone showed an active call to Natalie beginning eleven minutes before the police arrived.

The call never disconnected.

Detective Mills could not tell Claire what Natalie had heard until investigators spoke with her.

But Claire remembered Grant placing his phone face down on the workbench before dragging her into the garage.

At the time, she assumed he did not want interruptions.

Now she wondered whether Natalie had been meant to hear something.

Claire’s older sister, Monica, arrived around midnight carrying a sweater and Claire’s insurance card.

“Why were you in the garage with them?”

Claire looked down at the monitoring straps over her belly.
