Chapter 8 - THE REPORT MORGAN COULD NOT WITHDRAW
The insurer’s fraud investigator asked Morgan whether she wanted to report unauthorized use of Lily’s identity formally.
Morgan hesitated.
A formal report could lead to repayment demands, criminal review, and consequences for both Diane and Rachel. It could also create a permanent record protecting Lily from future liability.
Morgan signed.
She submitted the false claims, duplicate bags, hospital band, prescriptions, and Diane’s admission that she used Morgan’s insurance card.
She also requested new insurance identification numbers and placed a fraud alert on Lily’s account.
The decision could not be softened afterward.
Diane arrived at Morgan’s apartment that afternoon despite being told not to come.
She stood in the hallway holding groceries, two cans of formula, and the blue stuffed rabbit she kept at her house.
Morgan did not open the security chain.
“You reported me,” Diane said.
“I reported what happened.”
“You think some investigator cares why?”
“They’ll ask.”
Diane lowered the grocery bags.
“Rachel will lose Ava.”
“Rachel already risked losing her.”
“You don’t understand what she’s been through.”
“Then tell me.”
Diane’s mouth tightened.
“No.”
Morgan closed the door.
On the other side, Diane said, “I made one mistake.”
Morgan looked at Lily playing on the floor while Ava slept in the borrowed crib.
“One mistake doesn’t need four months of matching clothes.”
Diane left the groceries outside.
Morgan did not bring them in until an hour later.
That evening, Rachel attended a video meeting with the county worker. She admitted violating the safety plan and leaving Ava with Diane without permission.
She did not yet explain the original injury.
Because Rachel had disappeared for more than twenty-four hours, the county required a mental-health assessment before considering reunification.
Rachel agreed.
Then the worker informed Morgan that the emergency placement could last weeks, not days.
Morgan looked at her calendar, childcare costs, and nearly empty savings account.
