Before midnight, my phone lit up with my mother’s name. “Morgan… when are you coming back for the baby?” My stomach dropped. I looked beside me at my daughter sleeping peacefully and whispered, “Mom… Lily is here with me.” For a few seconds, the line went completely silent. Then my mother spoke again, her voice shaking. “THEN… WHOSE BABY IS SLEEPING IN MY LIVING ROOM?”

Morgan called Diane from the hospital parking garage.

Her mother answered on the fourth ring.

“What did Rachel mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who was holding Ava when her arm broke?”

Diane breathed into the phone without speaking.

Morgan repeated the question.

Finally, Diane said, “Rachel was home.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“You’re exhausted. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

Morgan ended the call.

She had spent years accepting Diane’s ability to postpone truth until everyone became too tired to demand it.

That morning, the county worker inspected Morgan’s apartment. The second bedroom had been Morgan’s home office. By noon, the desk was against the living-room wall and a borrowed crib stood beside the window.

Morgan’s supervisor approved three unpaid days off. More would require formal family leave paperwork.

Her daycare could not accept Ava without medical records, vaccination history, and legal placement documents.

Morgan’s savings had already thinned during maternity leave.

The consequences arrived in practical forms: formula, diapers, unpaid hours, and two babies waking at different times.

Rachel texted from an unfamiliar number.

You called child services before talking to me.

Morgan replied:

You left Ava under Lily’s name and disappeared.

Rachel wrote:

I needed you to see it.

See what?

No response.

Diane called later and asked to visit.

Morgan refused.

“You can’t keep me from my grandchildren.”

“Ava is under a county placement, and Lily is my child.”

“I was trying to protect this family.”

“You protected a lie.”

Diane’s voice hardened.

“You always think rules make you good.”

Morgan almost answered with the argument they had been having since high school.

Instead, she asked whether Diane had been alone with Ava the night of the fracture.

Diane hung up.

That evening, the pediatrician’s office called. Until Lily’s chart was corrected, the doctor wanted Morgan to verify every medication and vaccine entry before future treatment.
