Chapter 10 - WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE FIRST LIE
Rachel had gone to a late shift at a warehouse outside Grove City.
Diane agreed to watch Ava overnight.
At 2:00 a.m., Rachel received a call.
Diane said Ava had been crying for hours and suddenly stopped moving her left arm. She claimed the baby must have rolled against the crib rail.
At urgent care, the physician ordered an X-ray and reported the fracture.
Diane panicked.
Rachel had recently missed counseling appointments and was already being watched closely after an argument with Ava’s father. Diane said child services would remove the baby if they learned she had been injured while Rachel was absent and Diane was exhausted.
“So Mom told you to say you were holding her,” Morgan said.
Rachel nodded.
“She said she’d keep Ava safe until the investigation closed.”
“What actually happened?”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“Mom said Ava arched backward while she was lifting her. She grabbed one arm because she thought she was falling.”
It might have been a panicked accident.
What happened afterward was deliberate.
Diane persuaded Rachel to claim responsibility. Then she became the approved safety-plan caregiver, giving her even more control.
When Ava needed follow-up care, Diane feared doctors would connect the continuing pain to her overnight supervision.
She used Lily’s identity.
The matching clothes hid the babies’ differences.
The duplicate bag made the routine easier.
The false pharmacy labels allowed Diane to collect medicine without opening Ava’s monitored chart.
Three clues now made sense.
Diane’s hands shook beside the crib because she had stood over Ava after hurting her once before.
She blocked Morgan from going to the hospital because the false records would surface.
And Rachel left Ava dressed as Lily because exposing the disguise was the only way to expose the original lie.
Morgan felt sick.
“You could’ve told me.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“You believed Mom when she said I broke Ava’s arm.”
“I believed the report.”
“You believed the version she gave the report.”
Morgan had no answer.
Diane had not protected Rachel from the system.

And Morgan had helped by assuming the unreliable sister was always the easiest explanation.
