Chapter 5 - THE FIRST LIE DIANE ADMITTED

Diane admitted taking Ava to a different urgent-care clinic after the fracture.
She said Rachel had developed a fever and could not drive. Ava had stopped feeding and seemed unusually sleepy.
The safety plan required Diane to use Ava’s regular pediatrician, where the injury was already documented.
Diane feared another report.
“So you used Lily’s name,” Morgan said.
“I used your insurance card once.”
“How did you have it?”
“You left a copy in my emergency folder after Lily was born.”
Morgan remembered. She had given Diane medical information because she trusted her to babysit.
Diane used that trust like an unlocked door.
At the urgent-care clinic, she claimed Ava was Lily, gave Morgan’s address, and signed Morgan’s name on the intake screen.
The clinic diagnosed a viral infection and sent them home.
One visit became easier to repeat.
When Ava’s regular doctor called about the missed appointment, Diane said Rachel had moved temporarily.
When Ava developed another fever, Diane returned to the clinic under Lily’s name.
Then came the X-ray.
Morgan looked at the record. “Why did she need another X-ray?”
Diane folded her arms.
“She was favoring the same side.”
“After the fracture?”
“She was healing.”
“Then why hide it?”
Diane’s answer was immediate.
“Because people had already decided what kind of mother Rachel was.”
Morgan heard the old family pattern inside the sentence.
Rachel made a mistake. Diane explained it.
Rachel missed rent. Diane covered it.
Rachel lost a job. Diane blamed the manager.
Morgan asked questions. Diane called her cold.
The hospital discharged Lily with no medical concerns. Ava remained overnight for observation, with Morgan approved to stay.
Before Diane left, Morgan asked one final question.
“Where is Rachel now?”
Diane looked toward Ava’s room.
“I don’t know.”
Morgan did not believe her.
Ten minutes later, a nurse found an unopened envelope inside Ava’s diaper bag.
Rachel had written Morgan’s name across the front.
