Chapter 6 - THE DONATION THAT STOPPED

Colonel Hale suspended his proposed contribution that afternoon.

He did not demand the nonprofit close.

He asked the board for an independent review.

That distinction mattered because fourteen veterans were already receiving housing assistance through Homefront Landing.

Zariah did not want them punished for Marcus.

The board hired outside counsel and froze new fundraising while maintaining rent and basic services for current residents.

Marcus blamed Zariah immediately.

He called her attorney and described her as emotionally unstable after military trauma.

That tactic failed faster than he expected.

Zariah now worked as a clinical operations manager at an Inova rehabilitation facility.

She had held the position for four years.

Her employer knew about her veteran status and old injuries.

There was no disciplinary history.

No pattern of instability.

Marcus’s attempt to discredit her only created another written record.

Susan called Zariah that evening.

“Your sister’s engagement may be over.”

“That isn’t because of me.”

“She says Marcus feels betrayed.”

Zariah nearly laughed.

Instead, she asked a question.

“Did you know Chloe took my Army records?”

“No.”

“Did you ever notice they were missing?”

Susan hesitated.

“I stopped going through that trunk years ago. You didn’t want anyone touching it.”

Exactly.

The family knew.

They simply treated Zariah’s boundaries as personality quirks rather than rules.

Susan began crying.

Zariah wanted to comfort her.

She did not.

For once, everyone else could sit with discomfort they had not earned the right to hand back to her.

Three days later, Homefront Landing’s outside counsel requested an interview with Zariah.

They had found her signature on more than donor materials.

Her name appeared on an internal advisory committee roster.

Meeting minutes claimed she participated by telephone twice.

Zariah had never attended.

Someone had created a version of her that was more cooperative than the real woman.
