Chapter 10 - THE REASON MARCUS HUMILIATED HER ON THE LAWN
The major twist came from the donor meeting schedule.
Marcus had not lost control at the engagement party randomly.
He had planned to pressure Zariah that evening.
Colonel Hale was expected to announce his foundation’s commitment after dinner.
Before that happened, Marcus needed Zariah to sign a formal clinical-adviser agreement.
He had placed the document in a leather portfolio inside the estate office.
Chloe knew he intended to ask.
She did not know how far he would go if Zariah refused.
Marcus had spent months telling donors Zariah’s formal appointment was imminent.
Colonel Hale had begun asking to meet her.
The board had begun asking why their most important clinical adviser never attended meetings.
The lie was reaching the point where absence no longer helped.
Marcus needed a signature.
Or he needed Zariah discredited.
Three earlier moments changed meaning.
His line about women belonging in the kitchen was not only misogyny.
He wanted guests to see Zariah as unserious and emotional before she contradicted him.
His comment that her uniform “never made her matter” was designed to shrink the exact military credibility he had been selling privately.
And Chloe’s mockery about her “fragile bones” drew attention to Zariah’s injury in a way that made her appear physically unstable rather than combat-experienced.
Marcus expected humiliation to make her leave.
Then Colonel Hale saw Owen’s tag.
Everything reversed.
Hale had not simply recognized a war artifact.
He had recognized the only person in the garden whose story Marcus could not control once she started speaking for herself.
The board’s attorney found the unsigned adviser agreement in Marcus’s files.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
Get ZC signature before Hale dinner. If not, pivot to wellness concerns.
Zariah stared at the sentence.
“ZC.”
Not sister.
Not veteran.
