Chapter 12 - WHAT EVERYONE WAS TRYING TO SAVE
The central confrontation happened in the nonprofit attorney’s office in Tysons.
Marcus attended with counsel.
Chloe came separately.
Colonel Hale represented only his foundation.
Zariah sat beside her attorney.
The board wanted one final factual meeting before deciding whether to remove Marcus.
Marcus arrived angry.
“This organization exists because I built it.”
A board member asked why he needed Zariah’s forged signature.
“I didn’t forge it.”
“Then who did?”
Marcus looked toward Chloe.
Chloe stared back.
“No.”
The word surprised him.
He had expected her instinct to remain the same.
Protect him first.
Marcus shifted.
“Zariah verbally approved the concept.”
Zariah answered.
“No.”
“You told me veteran housing mattered.”
“That is not consent.”
“You said people coming home needed more than a hospital discharge packet.”
“I did.”
“That was the whole mission.”
Zariah shook her head.
“You took agreement with an idea and turned it into ownership of me.”
Colonel Hale asked Marcus why Owen’s name appeared in fundraising materials.
Marcus said Owen represented sacrifice.
Hale’s voice became very quiet.
“My son is not an advertising asset.”
Marcus finally lost his composure.
“I was trying to keep the project alive.”
There was his real motive.
Homefront Landing had begun with sincere intentions.
Marcus’s cousin had struggled after leaving the Marines. Marcus saw how difficult housing, work, and medical follow-up could become.
The first house genuinely helped people.
Then Marcus expanded too quickly.
Renovations cost more than expected.
Donations lagged.
His personal real-estate company carried debt.
He began using the nonprofit’s reputation to stabilize everything around him.
Once Owen’s story opened donor doors, he stopped asking whether he had the right.
Chloe wanted importance.
Marcus wanted survival.
Susan wanted family harmony.
Colonel Hale wanted Owen remembered honestly.
And Zariah wanted the right to decide whether her worst day belonged to anyone else.
