Chapter 11 - THE PART CHLOE COULDN’T BLAME ON MARCUS
Chloe tried once to make herself smaller inside the scandal.
She told the board Marcus manipulated her.
He had.
She said he took advantage of her insecurity around Zariah.
He had.
She said she never understood the legal significance of using military records.
Probably true.
Then outside counsel asked one question.
“Did your sister ever give you permission to use any of it?”
Chloe answered no.
That was the line she could not cross around.
She had betrayed Zariah before Marcus magnified the betrayal.
Susan finally admitted she had helped too.
Years earlier, when Marcus first asked about Zariah’s military background, Susan told him Zariah “would never care about publicity.”
She gave Chloe permission to retrieve the footlocker because she believed the records belonged to the family once Zariah left them in the basement.
Zariah listened to her mother explain this and felt something colder than anger.
No one had stolen a locked secret.
They had simply decided her privacy was not serious enough to respect.
Zariah had her own mistake to face.
She had spent years refusing every family conversation about Afghanistan.
When Chloe exaggerated what happened, Zariah corrected nothing.
When Susan told people Zariah “mostly worked medical support,” Zariah let her.
Silence protected Zariah from being turned into the family war story.
It also created an empty space other people eventually filled.
That did not make what they did her fault.
It did teach her something uncomfortable.
Privacy required boundaries spoken aloud, not just withdrawal.
She started with Susan.
“You never open that trunk again.”
Susan cried.
