Chapter 5 - THE BRIDE WHO STARTED ASKING QUESTIONS
Claire did not marry Ryan that night.
She didn’t dramatically throw her ring.
She didn’t slap him.
She simply said:
“I’m not signing anything today.”
That was worse for Ryan.
He could handle rage.
Uncertainty frightened him.
His parents tried to salvage the reception.
Guests ate.
Some left.
Others pretended not to stare.
I stayed in a hotel suite upstairs with James and Lily.
Lily still would not sit beside me.
I let her choose the distance.
That was one of the first things her therapist later praised me for.
At the time, it felt unbearable.
“Are you really Mommy?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Daddy said you got hurt.”
“I was hurt.”
“Then you died.”
“No.”
She looked suspicious.
Children believe the adults who are there every morning.
Ryan had been there.
I hadn’t.
My explanation had to compete with routine.
I showed her nothing legal.
No court papers.
No accusations.
Just a photograph from six months earlier.
Me holding that day’s newspaper beside the birthday card I had tried to send her.
James had suggested taking the photo after another package was returned.
Lily touched the screen.
“You had my card?”
“I made you a card.”
“Daddy said you forgot my birthday.”
My throat closed.
“No, baby.”
Her face tightened.
Then she asked the question I had feared most.
“Why didn’t you come get me?”
There was no answer a seven-year-old deserved to carry.
So I gave her the smallest truth.
“I tried. The grown-ups had a big problem, and I wasn’t allowed to fix it by just coming to the house.”
She looked down.
“Daddy said you didn’t want me.”
James turned away.
I stayed still.
“I have wanted you every day of your life.”
Lily started crying.
This time she moved toward me.
Only one step.
Then stopped.
I did not close the distance for her.
That step belonged to her.
Downstairs, Claire was asking Ryan her own questions.
Why had he told her I died?
Why had he described the custody case as an estate matter?
Why had he claimed adoption would be easy?
And most importantly:
Why had he been pushing to file immediately after the wedding?
Ryan finally admitted something.
There was a court review scheduled in five weeks.
For the first time in months, the custody evaluator was recommending expanded contact between Lily and me.
