Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN AT THE BALLROOM DOOR

Ryan knocked the burgundy velvet box out of Lily’s hands hard enough to crack it against the marble floor.
“I want Mommy!” my seven-year-old daughter cried.
Ryan bent toward her.
His voice was low.
Controlled.
Cruel.
“Your mother’s dead. Stop embarrassing me.”
I heard every word from the ballroom doorway.
For eleven months, my daughter had been alive somewhere without me.
And apparently, Ryan had spent part of that time teaching her I was dead.
My brother James reached Lily first.
He pulled her behind him.
“Funny,” he said. “That’s not what she told me.”
Ryan’s face changed.
The broken box had spilled open between them.
An old photograph slid halfway out.
Beside it lay a tiny brass key.
Ryan lunged.
“Don’t touch that.”
James looked toward the ballroom entrance.
Ryan followed his gaze.
That was when he saw me.
I stepped through the open doors holding a matching burgundy envelope.
Lily stared at me.
Her whole body went still.
“Mommy?”
I almost broke.
Ryan moved toward me.
“Emily, listen—”
“No.”
Behind him, wedding guests had begun turning in their chairs.
His bride stood near the altar.
Confused.
Beautiful.
Completely unprepared for the supposedly dead woman walking into her wedding.
I lifted the envelope.
“Tell them why you buried me.”
Ryan looked at Lily.
Then at his bride.
And for the first time, I understood something terrifying.

He hadn’t only lied to our daughter.
He had lied to everyone in that room.
