Chapter 12 - THE FIRST TIME RYAN TOLD THE TRUTH IN FRONT OF HER
The confrontation did not happen in a courtroom.
It happened in a therapist’s office with colored pencils on the table.
Ryan sat across from me.
Lily was in the adjoining playroom with another clinician.
Our reunification therapist asked Ryan one question.
“Did you tell Lily Emily was dead?”
Ryan stared at his hands.
“Yes.”
No qualification.
I almost cried from the shock of hearing a clean answer.
“Why?”
“I wanted her to stop asking for Emily.”
I closed my eyes.
The therapist continued.
“Why?”
Ryan swallowed.
“Because every time she asked, I felt like I was losing control.”
There it was.
Not Lily’s safety.
Not my mental health.
Control.
Ryan admitted the custody filing had begun from genuine anger and fear.
He told himself I was unstable because I was grieving and furious.
Then he discovered how useful that story was.
Family believed it.
Attorneys could work with it.
Lily eventually stopped demanding me.
Ryan’s life became easier.
Then he met Claire.
Claire wanted children.
Liked Lily.
Loved him.
Ryan saw the possibility of replacing the mess with a clean story.
Widower.
Devoted father.
New wife.
Second chance.
“I knew saying Emily died was wrong.”
Ryan’s voice cracked.
“But after I said it once, Lily stopped asking when she was coming home.”
I stared at him.
“So you kept saying it.”
“Yes.”
“And the money?”
He looked at me.
“I took it.”
The room seemed smaller.
“I thought I’d replace it in thirty days.”
“You didn’t.”
“No.”
“When I asked about the account?”
“I panicked.”
“And you used my grief.”
“Yes.”
He started crying.
I felt nothing satisfying.
No victory.
Just exhaustion.
The therapist asked what he had been protecting.
Ryan answered:
“The version of myself where I wasn’t the guy who stole from his kid and destroyed his marriage.”
That was probably the most truthful sentence he had spoken in years.
