Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING CLAIRE GAVE ME

Claire asked to see me once more.

We met six months after the wedding.

She brought the deep-burgundy envelope.

The original one I carried into the ballroom had belonged to James.

This was another.

“I found this while moving out of Ryan’s house.”

Inside were unsent wedding vows.

Ryan’s.

I almost refused to read them.

Claire said, “Read one paragraph.”

So I did.

Ryan had written about being given a second life after tragedy.

About raising Lily alone.

About believing love could return after death.

Beautiful words.

Completely false.

Then Claire showed me the date.

He had written them before he ever told Lily I was dead.

I stared at her.

“What?”

The file creation date was three weeks earlier than the first documented statement Lily made about my “death.”

Ryan had constructed the widower story for Claire first.

Then taught it to Lily.

Not the other way around.

That mattered emotionally even if it changed nothing legally.

He had not blurted out something cruel to stop a child asking questions.

He had developed an identity.

Then reshaped his daughter’s reality to support it.

I folded the vows.

“Why give me this?”

Claire looked toward the window.

“Because for a long time I thought I was the woman he chose after losing you.”

Her eyes filled.

“I was actually the woman he used to make losing you look true.”

I reached across the table.

For the first time, I touched her hand.

Neither of us had caused the other.

Ryan had arranged us as rivals because rivals compare each other instead of comparing stories.

Before leaving, Claire asked:

“Do you think he loved me?”

“Yes.”

She looked surprised.

“I think Ryan loved a lot of people.”

I folded the vows back into the envelope.

“He just kept choosing fear over honesty.”

Claire nodded.

That was enough.

I did not need another woman destroyed to prove I had survived.
