At the motel, Lily dropped to the carpet and pressed her face into the dog's neck. She asked if Frank had watched Grandma serve the plate. Julia said yes. Lily moved her chair away from Julia's bed. The distance was two feet, but it changed the room. Owen documented the reunion and booked an exam. Sadie was dehydrated, not injured. Frank offered to pay. Julia declined, though her debit card nearly failed. That evening she explained the staged meal without softening it. Lily listened, then said, "You left me there because Grandma paid things." Julia wanted to correct the timeline, but the truth stood. She had worked late, accepted Margaret's supervision, and ignored Lily's shrinking voice because the household looked stable. Sadie placed one paw on Lily's shoe after three taps. Julia waited for another. None came. Across town, Margaret called the school district and reported that Julia had abandoned her job and was unstable. By morning, Julia's leave request had become a fitness review.
